Brightbridge Wealth Management Headlines: Drowning in the kingdom’s political divide

Brightbridge Wealth Management Headlines: Drowning in the kingdom’s political divide

Most pundits had written off the Red-Green coalition led by then chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. High unemployment, slowed growth, scandals in state finances and controversies over new taxes and national insurance all pointed to the impending downfall of the chancellor.

But within a matter of weeks, headlines read ”Flood crisis lifts Schroeder from election doldrums”, ”Flood offers Schroeder poll boosts” and ”Schroeder seizes on flood as lifebelt”.

The media said he took on the role of caring statesman and national saviour. The Daily Telegraph said, ”Mr Schroeder has seemed to strike the right blend of grave concern, reassurance and decisive action.”

All Germans were called on to unite and save ”homes, lives and national heritage”.

September 2002: Mr Schroeder won another four-year term.

This was an example of opportunity in crisis. This was an opportunity to unite the country in the face of disaster, and to reap the political gains that come with it. Mr Schroeder capitalised on it very successfully.

Thailand, November 2011.
The finger-pointing and headline-stealing by the Pheu Thai-led national government and the Democrat-controlled Bangkok Metropolitan Administration are an embarrassment. The destructive rumours spread by supporters of both camps are a travesty.
This applies especially to the rumours that the flood was instigated purposefully and the situation made worse intentionally to discredit and overthrow the government of Yingluck Shinawatra. This may seem absurd to some, but it is entirely believable to others blinded by political agenda.
This and other strong allegations might even be true, but they should be tested using evidence, not political sentiment.
The motives of both political camps in Thailand are three-fold.
Pheu Thai must do whatever it takes to keep hold of power and the Democrats must do whatever it takes to take back power, or at least to make sure they win the next Bangkok governor elections. These are the natural instincts of any agent of politics.
The second motive for both parties then is to undermine and discredit opponents as much as possible. This is called dirty politics, but no one has ever said that Thailand’s politics is wholly clean or that any country’s politics is for that matter.
The last motive for both parties is a desire to save lives and livelihoods and to stop this flood crisis.

Brightbridge Wealth Management Headlines: Mexican film director Inarritu honored in Zurich

http://brightbridgewealthmanagement-mag.com/

ZURICH — Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has picked up a special honor for a body of work that includes this year’s Oscar-nominated “Biutiful,” the haunting tale of a cancer-stricken father.
The director acclaimed for movies such as “Babel” and “Amores Perros” received a Golden Eye award for career achievement Saturday night from the Zurich Film Festival.
It is the first time the festival has given one of its top awards to a Mexican director.
Inarritu’s movies have been nominated for 10 Oscars and feature his well-known style of interweaving several simultaneous plot lines.
The festival in Switzerland’s biggest city ends Sunday after drawing an estimated 45,000 visitors.

Brightbridge Wealth Management Headlines: New Patents From Google Shore up HTC’s Defenses

http://brightbridgewealth-management.com/

Armed with new patents transferred from Google, HTC has filed a new lawsuit against Apple and amended two previous legal complaints.
HTC filed the new lawsuit against Apple Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware. HTC accuses Apple of infringing four patents in a range of products and services including Macintosh computers, iPhones, iPods, iPads, iTunes, MobileMe and iCloud.
The four patents were originally assigned to Motorola but were all transferred to Google either late last year or early this year. Then, last week, all four patents were transferred to HTC.
HTC did not respond to questions about whether it bought the patents from Google or if Google gave it the patents.
In addition, HTC on Wednesday amended its complaint against Apple with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to assert five former Google patents. Those patents originated with Palm and Openwave, were transferred to Google and last week were transferred to HTC.
HTC also amended another previous suit, filed in Delaware, to add the new patents to that complaint.
HTC’s new complaints are the latest in an ongoing battle with Apple, which has attacked several Android licensees in court. The disputes are an indication of just how competitive the mobile phone market has grown. Apple and Android have the largest market shares in the mobile market in the U.S.
In July, the ITC issued an initial determination that HTC infringed two Apple patents. The ITC has also agreed to investigate a separate complaint against HTC filed by Apple and is investigating an HTC complaint against Apple.
HTC has had a relatively weak patent portfolio compared to its competitors. Having access to the new patents from Google could help it shore up its defenses in its disputes with Apple.
In addition to the HTC lawsuit, Apple has filed suits against Samsung and Motorola. It has instigated the banning of Samsung tablets in Australia and Europe.

Brightbridge Wealth Management Headlines: Barcelona, Madrid set to resume league domination

http://brightbridgewealthmanagement-facts.com/

Barcelona and Real Madrid are set to resume their domination in the Spanish league this weekend, as their rivals band together to level the financial playing field against the two giants.
Spain’s traditional powerhouses recorded lopsided victories in the opening league round and could very well do so again Saturday as Barcelona is at Real Sociedad and Madrid welcomes Getafe in a Spanish capital derby.
With the duo’s grip on Spanish football ever strengthening, at least a dozen of the remaining 18 topflight clubs are meeting Thursday to discuss measures aimed at improving TV revenue sharing. About half of that money currently goes to Barcelona and Madrid, with the pair pulling in at least $250-million.
For Barcelona, centre back Carles Puyol trained normally Thursday and the Spain defender could play for the first time since May after recovering from knee surgery. Gerard Pique remains sidelined for the match at the Anoeta stadium with a calf injury.
Coach Pep Guardiola survived without the pair in the season’s opening win, using a Johan Cruyff-, total football-inspired 3-4-3 formation that displayed the virtues of Barcelona’s star-studded midfield and allowed newcomers Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez to get on the scoresheet.
“Evidently this Barca is better than last year’s,” defender Daniel Alves said. “We’ve incorporated great players, world stars, so it’s inevitable we’ll be better.”
The three-time defending Spanish champions will use the contest to prepare for Tuesday’s game against AC Milan as the European champions begin their Champions League defence.
Madrid is at Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday but first has its opening match of the season at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium with midfield signings Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop still sidelined by injury.
Defenders Ricardo Carvalho and Pepe appeared side-by-side in good spirits despite problems with Portugal last week, when Carvalho walked out on his national side citing Pepe’s insertion into the starting lineup without having trained as unacceptable.

Brightbridge Wealth Management Headlines: Google cuts deal for Dealmap

http://brightbridgewealthmanagement-facts.com/

Can I get a discount for some Groupon envy treatment?
Google has acquired Dealmap, a California-based startup that will fuel Mountain View’s efforts to mimic Groupon.
Launched in May 2010, Dealmap aggregates “daily deals” from hundreds of sources, and according to the company, its various services are now used by over 2 million people.
“We are impressed with what The Dealmap team has accomplished and excited to welcome them to Google,” Google said in a statement shared with various news outlets. “We’ve been thrilled with the early success of our commerce offerings, and we think they can help us build even better products and services for consumers and merchants.”
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Google recently rolled out its own daily deals service, Google Offers, after apparently failing in a bid to purchase Groupon, the poster child of the online daily deals services. Google Offers was first launched in Portland, and it has since expanded to New York and San Francisco. Presumably, Dealmap will be rolled into the Offers effort.
“We believe Google provides the ideal platform to help us accelerate our growth and fulfill our mission,” Dealmap said in a blog post. “We’re passionate about helping people save money while having great local experiences, and in Google we’ve found the perfect partner that shares this passion, as well as our vision and strategy. We believe that joining Google will help us innovate in new and unexplored areas of commerce.”
Dealmap said that “for time being”, it will continue to support its primary services, including its main website, mobile apps, daily email service, and API. The company has about 15 employees, and the entire staff will be moved from Menlo Park, California to Google HQ in Mountain View

Brightbridge Wealth Management Headlines: Investors fear stock markets haven’t hit bottom

http://brightbridgewealth-management.com/

With the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 513 points on Thursday, it capped off a two week run of bad days that have left the major Blue Chip stock index down 1,341 points since July 21.
The Dow closing down 512.76 points to 11,383.68 will rank as one of the Top 10 worst single-day point drops in the stock index’s history, and has left many financial experts asking if the worst is yet to come.
The stock markets posted some of the worst drops in years Thursday as investors' fears over a slowing global economy sparked a sell-off on Wall Street.
Some analysts are questioning whether Wall Street’s expectations for corporate earnings for the third quarter are too high and may have to be pulled back. If that happens, it could be a wave of negative news that drives stocks down lower.
Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank, told MarketWatch that investors are worried about how to “get out of this roller coaster of the relentless onslaught of bad news.”
